WHAT IS AQUATIC SCIENCE ALL ABOUT?

Aquatic Science is much like any other biological science in that we study the ecology and biology of living things that are depend on aquatic habitats to survive.  For most students, taking this course stimulates thoughts of charismatic marine wildlife or maybe going to the coast or SeaWorld for a class field trip. Although these ideas are a great starting place to spark your interest in our subject, our program is not limited to marine organisms or field trips to the Texas coast.  I hope to open your curiosity up to the watery world that exits just outside your front door.  As aquatic scientists, we will also focus our attention on the abundant and varied freshwater environments (such as inland lakes, ponds, rivers, creeks, and wetland ecosystems) we are blessed to have right here in the great state of Texas!

In this course, we will cover many aspects of aquatic ecology in both freshwater and saltwater environments.  The primary purpose behind our course is to put you into the job of being an aquatic biologist, immersing you in several key areas of study.  The fields of Oceanography and Marine Biology (the study of the oceans and ocean life), Limnology (the study of lakes and ponds), Ichthyology (the study of fish and their habitats) and Aquatic Zoology (the study of animals that live in and around water) comprise the majority of the concepts we will cover.  But, there will also be a ‘splash’ of some of the Earth science you learned in middle school as review.  As in all biology related courses, we will explore the world of living things and analyze the factors that promote life on our plant and do so as an Aquatic Biologist!
